The Dumont Dunes communications site is one of the most difficult locations to access in the region, with deep sand and steep peaks that most 4×4 vehicles can’t navigate. To transport materials and equipment to such remote sites, bulldozers and helicopters are required. High winds at the site had destroyed the original solar array, and heavy loads had rendered the battery system inoperative. For the past year, an AT&T operator had to refuel on-site generators every two days to keep the site functional.
In 2024, NewGrid was contracted to overhaul the site, engineering and constructing solar arrays capable of withstanding 150mph winds, while transitioning the site to modern energy storage and power conversion systems. NewGrid’s team of remote specialists—comprising metal fabricators, welders, field engineers, and PV installers—completely rebuilt the site. After commissioning in October 2024, the generators now only operate during poor weather conditions, significantly reducing their use and ensuring greater reliability for the communications site.
