How to choose the right off-grid solar system.

Going off-grid is a bigger decision than picking panels. The system has to match how you actually use power, survive where you're putting it, and keep running long after the install crew leaves. Here's how to think it through.

First Question

Off-grid system or microgrid?

The line comes down to scale and complexity. An off-grid power system is small to medium: solar panels, a battery bank, an inverter, and usually a generator, powering a building or two. A microgrid is larger and more complex, built to run multiple buildings, heavy or three-phase loads, and sometimes a whole community, with its equipment coordinated as one plant. If your site has a single cabin or home, you're in off-grid territory. If it has a payroll, guests, or equipment that can't stop, you're likely looking at a microgrid.

Start With One Number

Get the utility's quote to bring in the grid.

Before anything else, ask the power company what it would cost to run the grid to your property. That single number tells you most of what you need to know. Under about $25,000, connecting to the grid is usually the cheaper path. Between $25,000 and $50,000, it's a real toss-up, and off-grid starts to make sense for the control it gives you. Above $50,000, off-grid is usually the better long-term cost, and above $75,000 it almost always is.

Size It Right

Build to your loads, not to a kit.

Pre-packaged kits and solar trailers look tempting because they're cheap and simple. The problem is that a standardized box is sized for a standardized site, and remote properties rarely are. A real off-grid system is sized to how your loads behave across a day and a season: the pump that runs all summer, the equipment that starts hard, the stretch of cloudy days you have to ride out. Undersize it and the generator runs every night. The fix is engineering to your actual loads, with room to grow.

The Part Most People Miss

Who builds and services it matters more than the gear.

The most common reason we get called isn't bad equipment. It's a system installed by a crew that didn't specialize in off-grid power, then left behind when something went wrong. A remote system is only as good as the team standing behind it. Look for one firm that engineers, builds, and services the system, so there's one number to call and no finger-pointing when a remote site goes quiet. That accountability is worth more over the life of the system than any spec on a datasheet.

A dependable off-grid system is more than an array. It pairs solar with enough battery storage to carry the site overnight and through weather, an inverter sized to the loads, and usually a generator for extended cloudy stretches and maintenance windows. On critical sites, it also includes remote monitoring and a service contract, so problems get caught before they become outages. Built right, the whole thing is designed to be serviced and expanded for decades, not just switched on.
