The Dumont Dunes site is among the hardest locations to reach in the region — deep sand and grades most 4x4s can't climb, with materials arriving by bulldozer and helicopter. High winds destroyed the original solar array, heavy loads killed the battery system, and for a year an AT&T operator drove out every two days to refuel generators.

In 2024 NewGrid's remote-site crew — metal fabricators, welders, field engineers, and PV installers — rebuilt the site: solar arrays engineered to hold through 150 mph winds, modern power conversion, and supercapacitor energy storage.
