Cal Black Memorial Airport sits at Halls Crossing on the southeast shore of Lake Powell, the aviation gateway to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The field ran on a legacy power conversion system with partial solar and frequent diesel generator hours, and the municipality set a hard goal: run the entire airport on solar and battery.
A stand-alone microgrid for a mission-critical field.
NewGrid delivered a turnkey off-grid microgrid in 2025: a new solar array, a 204 kWh lithium battery bank, 45 kW of Sol-Ark power conversion, and dual diesel generators held on standby duty, budgeted for fewer than 100 run-hours a year.

Live since July 2025, the system has powered every airport operation without interruption. It is the first fully solar-powered off-grid airport in the United States, and a working model for critical infrastructure beyond the reach of the grid.
