The challenge

The network 2,500 workers depend on ran on diesel.

This Central Arizona copper mine runs a closed communications network that more than 2,500 employees rely on to coordinate operations and stay safe. The tower and support buildings sit on a rugged peak inside the mine and ran on diesel alone; extending utility power up the mountain was ruled out by cost and disruption to mining operations.

What we built

A dedicated microgrid engineered for zero downtime.

In 2024 the mining group contracted NewGrid to design and build a dedicated off-grid microgrid for the site: 80 kW of solar, 615 kWh of outdoor-rated lithium storage, 120 kW of Schneider inverters, and a 60 kW diesel generator in reserve.

System specs
  • 80 kW solar
  • 615 kWh Sol-Ark L3 outdoor lithium battery
  • 120 kW Schneider inverters
  • 60 kW diesel generator
  • 277/480V three phase
The outcome

Running without interruption since day one.

Commissioned in December 2024, the microgrid has run at 100% uptime since. NewGrid is now engaged with additional mining clients as microgrid adoption spreads through heavy industry.
