The challenge

A mountain village the grid never reached.

A thousand feet above Crown King, this 50-acre mountaintop property — old gold mine included — was mid-upgrade in 2020 when a grid-tied solar contractor who had won the bid sight unseen looked at the access road and withdrew. Off-grid is a different trade.

What we built

A system built for the peak and the plan.

NewGrid engineered the property like a small utility: transformers, higher distribution voltages, and three-phase power, all mapped to a ten-year build plan. Phase one — the main and guest houses — was completed in 2021 on 22 kW of solar, 133 kWh of Discover lithium, and 21 kW of Schneider inverters.

System specs
  • 22 kW solar
  • 133 kWh Discover AES lithium battery
  • 21 kW Schneider inverters
  • 25 kW propane generator
  • 120/240V split phase
The outcome

Room to grow, off the grid.

The main lodge hosts ten guests with no generator support, Phase II is underway, and a monthly service contract keeps the power system growing in step with the property — toward a 40-person compound fed by its own greenhouses.
