The challenge

A world-away island running on an undersized battery bank.

The resort opened in 2018 with an undersized lead-acid battery bank that limited how the island could operate. Thirty miles offshore, every reliability problem is also a logistics problem.

What we built

2 megawatt-hours of storage, in two stages.

NewGrid came in as technical consultants and ended up running the fix: system-wide communications upgrades and 2 megawatt-hours of lithium battery storage, installed and commissioned in two stages in 2022.

System specs
  • 355 kW solar
  • 2 MWh Fortress lithium battery
  • 216 kW SMA Sunny Island inverters
  • Dual 250 kW diesel generators
  • 230/415V three phase

The outcome

Reliable power at resort scale, 30 miles offshore.

The microgrid now carries dozens of guest villas and a staff of more than 150, with additional guest and staff housing already underway. It stands as one of the largest private microgrids in Central America.
